The Nationwide Foundation awarded £120,000 of funding to the Highlands Small Communities Housing Trust (HSCHT) to turn two empty properties into affordable homes.

A bungalow in Acharacle in Lochaber was the first house to be converted and is situated on the western end of Glen Shiel. It had been empty for over six years, yet in summer 2015 a local couple moved in as tenants following the renovation. A second community-owned property was also renovated, which is located further north in Achiltibuie. This is an old school house that was converted into two apartments.

By renovating long-term empty properties in the Scottish Highlands, more reasonably priced homes can be created, supporting the stability of the community.
