The Nationwide Foundation is delighted to announce that Saphié Ashtiany has been appointed to chair its board of trustees.
Saphié takes over the role from Ben Stimson, who has completed his term as a Nationwide Foundation trustee. Ben was on the board of the Nationwide Foundation for 10 years, holding the role of chair for the last six years.
Saphié is the principal of Ashtiany Associates, a small consultancy specialising in equality law and working predominantly with institutional and charitable bodies. She is also a visiting professorial fellow at Queen Mary University of London, researching aspects of equality law.
Alongside her role as chair of the Nationwide Foundation, she also holds other trusteeships, including at Joseph Rowntree Foundation, Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust and Equal Rights Trust.
In addition to the welcoming its new chair, the Nationwide Foundation has also has appointed two new trustees:
- Terrie Alafat, Chief Executive of the Chartered Institute of Housing
- Judith McNeill, former Grants Director of Comic Relief

Saphié Ashtiany was appointed as a trustee of the Nationwide Foundation on 12 July 2018. Ben Stimson retired from the board of the Nationwide Foundation and from the role of chair on 14 September 2018. Saphié was appointed to the board on 12 July 2018 and to the chair on 14 September 2018.
Juliet Cockram and Martin Coppack retired as trustees in June 2018 after both serving their maximum terms. Judith McNeill was appointed on 6 September 2018 and Terrie Alafat was appointed on 15 September 2018.
